The Scorpion King 2: Rise of a Warrior - A Prequel to the Mummy Franchise

The Scorpion King 2: Rise of a Warrior is a 2008 direct-to-DVD action adventure film that serves as a prequel to the 2002 film The Scorpion King, which itself is a prequel to the 1999 reimagining of The Mummy. The film stars Michael Copon as Mathayus, a young warrior who seeks to avenge his father's death by the evil king Sargon (Randy Couture). Along the way, he encounters mythical creatures, ancient gods and legendary weapons.

The film was directed by Russell Mulcahy and written by Randall McCormick, based on characters created by Stephen Sommers. The film was shot in Cape Town, South Africa, and features a mix of practical and computer-generated effects. The film was released on Blu-ray Disc and DVD on August 19, 2008, by Universal Studios Home Entertainment.

Plot Summary

Mathayus witnesses his father's murder by Sargon, the ruthless commander of the Akkadian army, who uses black magic to gain power. Mathayus joins the elite Black Scorpions squad, hoping to get close enough to Sargon to kill him. However, he is ordered to assassinate his own brother Noah, who has defied Sargon. Mathayus refuses and rescues Noah, but a magic arrow follows them and kills Noah.

Mathayus flees with his childhood friend Layla (Karen David) to Egypt, where he hopes to find the Spear of Osiris, a weapon that can penetrate Sargon's magic shield. On their way, they meet Ari (Simon Quarterman), a Greek poet who tells them that the Spear only works on Egyptian creatures, and that they need the Sword of Damocles, which is hidden in the Underworld. They also encounter Fung (Tom Wu), a Chinese warrior who joins them.

The group travels to Greece, where they enter the Labyrinth of the Minotaur. They fight their way through the maze and reach the Underworld, where they are confronted by Astarte (Natalie Becker), the goddess of war and love. Astarte wants the Sword of Damocles for herself and tries to seduce Mathayus. Layla fights Astarte while Fung and Ari find the sword. Mathayus frees Layla and they escape with the sword.

Astarte sends Sargon after them and gives him more dark powers. Sargon returns to Akkad and sets fire to the city by pumping oil into the water supply. Mathayus and his allies arrive and fight their way to Sargon's palace. Mathayus faces Sargon, who reveals himself to be his father in disguise. Sargon explains that he killed his real father and took his place using magic. He also says that he is Mathayus' destiny and offers him to join him.

Mathayus rejects Sargon's offer and stabs him with the Sword of Damocles, breaking his magic shield. Sargon transforms into a giant scorpion and attacks Mathayus. Mathayus uses his father's pendant, which contains a scorpion venom antidote, to poison Sargon's sting. He then cuts off Sargon's tail and impales him with it. Sargon dies and Mathayus is hailed as the new king of Akkad.

Reception

The Scorpion King 2: Rise of a Warrior received mostly negative reviews from critics and fans alike. The film was criticized for its low budget, poor acting, weak story, inconsistent continuity and lack of connection to the previous films. The film has a 4% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 24 reviews, with an average rating of 2.5/10. The site's consensus reads: "Cheap-looking sets and costumes are among many unfortunate missteps in this poorly conceived sequel." [6]

The film was also a commercial failure, grossing only $18 million worldwide against a budget of $15 million. [7] The film did not spawn any sequels or spin-offs, unlike The Scorpion King, which had three more direct-to-DVD sequels: The Scorpion King 3 9160f4acd4
